An enduring resource for practitioners at every stage to deepen understanding, strengthen practice, and enhance reflective skills.
Illinois Association for Infant Mental Health IECMH Competencies provide an infant early childhood mental health (IECMH) lens – enabling practitioners to reflect on all aspects of a child's development within the context of the family, community/society, culture, and with attention to systemic and historical impacts.
ILAIMH's framework is unique and supports reflective practices through supervision/consultation, between peers, in communities of practice, and for individuals. The Competencies blend foundational knowledge with newer and diverse perspectives, research, and practical resources to help practitioners stay current and deepen their work.
The ILAIMH competencies are a playground for my professional Home Visiting soul. A written interdisciplinary template that encourages me to be curious and introspective, maintain a humble demeanor and challenges me with advocating, engaging, and supporting strength-based diverse relationships and community systems.
~ Christine Sparks, MBA I/ECMH-C
Engaging with these competencies has strengthened my capacity for self-reflection and self-care, deepened my awareness of how personal biases shape relationships, and enabled me to facilitate reflective spaces that promote open dialogue on inclusiveness and cultural diversity. Competencies have also enhanced my understanding of the complexities families face in supporting their children’s development and the protective factors that foster resilience within families and communities.
~ Marisa Gil, bilingual IECMH consultant for a Strong Families home visiting program, I/ECMH-C
Participation in the ILAIMH Credential, through Erikson Institute’s IMH Certificate Program, profoundly impacted my professional growth. It expanded my awareness of how to effectively support families, strengthened my understanding of the importance of relationship-based interactions, and highlighted the vital role of reflective practice when working with diverse families and situations. The program enhanced my ability to approach my work with greater empathy, insight, and collaboration.
~ Vickie Robinson, Developmental Therapist, I/ECMH-C
The credential not only deepened my knowledge of I/ECMH concepts and competencies, but it really deepened my reflective skills. I went through the credential as I was moving from direct practice work into systems policy and advocacy work and it gave me a framework in how I can be more reflective in my policy making and analysis and my grassroots advocacy. It gives me authenticity when I talk to legislators and policymakers, but also with programs, providers, and families. It also brought me into a community that I still utilize today.
~ Alli Lowe-Fotos, MSW, LCSW, I/ECMH-C
The ILAIMH credential allowed me to professionally evolve, dig deeper, and give life to the IECMH competencies. The immersion has broadened my perspective and, as time passed, gave birth to a sense of personal empowerment. As relationships with funding decision-makers were forged, fresh ideas to provide quality support and growth opportunities surfaced. The gateway to positively impact and engage those who provide care to young children and their families was opened.
~ Zenia Haynes, MSW, I/ECMH-C, Administrator in Office of Childcare
