Fostering connection, support, and inspiration

ILAIMH-Underline-Blue

ILAIMH offers a unique reflective practice space for infant and early childhood professionals through racial affinity groups, made possible by a generous grant from the Irving Harris Foundation.

What Are Racial Affinity Groups?

Racial affinity groups bring together professionals who share a racial identity to foster connection, support, and inspiration. These groups are emerging in many workplace settings, providing a space for early childhood professionals to deepen their understanding of their work, experiences, and relationships with others.

These groups create a safe, reflective environment where participants can slow down, examine systemic inequities, and build critical consciousness about the broader conditions that impact disparities in child and family outcomes.

What to Expect

Racial affinity groups provide a space to:

  • Deepen self-awareness around thoughts, reactions, beliefs, and motivations in professional practice.
  • Cultivate curiosity and compassion over assumption and judgment when working with children, caregivers, and colleagues.
  • Explore the impact of systemic inequities, implicit bias, privilege, social justice, and generational trauma on families and professionals.
  • Examine internalized oppression and work toward healing and liberation.

Who Should Apply?

We welcome professionals across the early childhood workforce, including:

  • Early intervention specialists and therapists
  • Home visitors and parent educators
  • Early education and health professionals
  • Program administrators, supervisors and childcare directors
  • I/ECMH consultants and clinicians
  • Community behavioral health clinicians working with young children

Registration

Registration is now open for ILAIMH's Reflective Racial Affinity Groups, a six-session virtual series for infant and early childhood professionals running November/December 2026 through May 2027.

Race and racial identity shape how professionals experience their work, their organizations, and their field, but there are few structured spaces to actually talk about that with people who share the experience. These groups are designed to be that space: professionals who share a racial identity meeting together over time for honest dialogue, shared reflection, and mutual support, specifically within the context of infant and early childhood work.

Each cohort meets six times for 90 minutes, with a consistent group and facilitator across the series, plus one combined all-cohort session in the spring that brings every group together. Sessions are led by a trained Racial Affinity Group facilitator.

Group options:

  • Black
  • Latinx
  • Diverse Racial Identities
  • BIPOC
  • White

Participants can expect a consistent group of peers, dedicated time for reflection rather than lecture-style content, and space to talk through the realities of their work.

Clinical CEUs, Early Intervention CEUs, and Gateways CEUs are available.

Registration cost:

  • Members: $60
  • Non-members: $90
  • Deadline to apply: Friday, November 6 or until groups are full
